Preparing for your appointment:
What to expect
Your appointment may vary, depending on if you require a Limited Medical, which is less comprehensive, or a General Medical examination, which is more detailed and covers a broader range of checks.
When you arrive at the clinic, we’ll check you’ve got your original passport with you.
We’ll ask you to complete an immigration medical form and to read and sign a consent form. You can fill this out before you come by downloading it here.
You’ll then see a Healthcare Technician who will see you for your first appointment which includes taking bloods (if you require them). They’ll then give you a chest x-ray form (if you require one) to take with you to a radiology clinic. This first appointment will take you 15-30 minutes.
We’ll then see you 3+ days later for your second appointment, by which stage your blood test and chest xray results will be available for the doctor to review. The doctor will see you for a 15 minute appointment to complete the immigration medical exam and submit this to Immigration NZ. Please be aware that the immigration medical is a full body exam which will require you to remove all clothing except underwear, a gown will be provided. Our professional team will respect your privacy with utmost care
If you are unwell or are within three days of menstruating, we will need to reschedule your appointment as this can affect your test results (e.g. by impacting your blood pressure or having blood in your urine).
If you will be getting an x-ray, please avoid wearing metal or an underwire bra.
Please drink plenty of water before your appointment as a urine test is part of the exam.
What to bring
When you come for your medical exam, you will need to bring:
- Your passport (or equivalent original identity document - see the accepted list here). Must be current and valid.
- Your full medical history (such as information about previous health issues or special conditions, all current medications you are taking, and previous x-rays, test results or specialist letters).
- Glasses or contact lenses if you have a prescription
- Notice of what Visa type you are applying for
- Interpreter – if you do not have a conversational level of English speaking ability you will need to bring an interpreter at your own cost
- If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must accompany you

Immigration Medical Questions
-
Do I need an Immigration Medical?
To be granted a visa for residency or a temporary visa to work or study in New Zealand, you’ll usually need a medical certificate to confirm with Immigration New Zealand that you meet the ‘acceptable standard of health criteria’. This criteria helps to ensure that applicants do not pose a risk to public health, that their health will not stop them fulfilling the purposes of their visa (e.g. working or studying) and whether the applicant is going to add significant cost to or demands on NZ’s health services.
If you are unsure of whether you need a medical for your visa, you can check the criteria on immigration New Zealand’s site, or give us a call and we can help.
In general, most stays of more than 12 months require both a medical exam and chest x-ray. If you are staying under 6 months, you generally will not need a medical exam or x-ray (except under certain circumstances such as seasonal worker visas from some countries). If you are staying between 6-12 months, you will need a chest x-ray if you are from (or have been visiting for longer periods), a country that is not on the low incidence of tuberculosis list.

What if I can’t make my appointment?
We can reschedule your appointment to a time that suits. Please call us at least 12 hours prior to your appointment to reschedule, to avoid a no-show or cancellation fee.
-
Do I need a Limited Medical or General Medical?
This will depend on which Visa you are applying for and your specific situation. Start your visa application process and be clear on what Visa you need before you book your medical exam. This will help you know what service to book and what information you will need to provide your panel physician for the exam. You can start your visa application here.

What is the difference between a LImited Medical and a General or Full Medical?
A limited medical is less comprehensive and covers just a few main conditions.
A general medical is a comprehensive assessment that covers a broader range of conditions and examinations with a thorough health check. You can see the forms used for each type of exam here, which outline what is assessed. (You do not need to fill out this form yourself, our medical team will help you fill it out during the exam and provide it to immigration).
